Meet our Waterfront Counselors
Alex Evans
Waterfront Director, 3rd Year Staff Member
UC San Diego – Data Science major
Alex is coming back for his 15th summer at Roughing It! He was a camper (incl. a CILT & JC) for 12 years before joining our staff last summer. He did an incredible job as the B23 Group Counselor and moved into the Waterfront Director position summer 2022. We’re excited to have him back this summer as Director of his favorite camp activity, Waterfront! Alex is transferring from Diablo Valley College to UC San Diego with a major in data science.
Ethan Gelston
Assistant Waterfront Director, 1st Year Staff Member
Diablo Valley College
Ethan is joining us for the first time this summer. He is an Eagle Scout and brings his Boy Scout experience and love for the outdoors and water sports, to Roughing It this season. He has multiple years of canoeing, rowing, fishing, and kayaking which makes him perfect to lead our Waterfront activities. He has family in Alaska and learned everything about boats and fishing and the outdoors from a young age. His favorite memories growing up are camping with the Boy Scouts and his Dad during summer. He is transferring from Chico State to Diablo Valley College with plans to attend a school with a film department
Maximum "Max" Odle
Canoe Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
UCLA
Max is enjoying his first summer here at Roughing It! He is currently attending UCLA and is a certified EMT. Max loves the water, and is an avid surfer. He also has years of experience as a surf camp counselor. Max has experience with canoeing, rowing, fishing, and kayaking, and is excited to share this experience with our campers
Jessica "Jess" Salinas
Kayak Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
Michigan State University
Jess grew up in Michigan and is going into her third year at Michigan State University. She works there as a lab assistant and gives tours for prospective students. Jess also is involved in the school’s fencing club and their women in engineering program. She can be found playing in a local bagpipe band, Spartan Marching Band in the trombone section, and her school’s pep band. Jess grew up on a lake in Michigan where she has been canoeing and kayaking ever since she could remember
Luca Frippiat
Rowing Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
Santa Barbara City College – Criminal Justice Reform major
On staff for his first year at Roughing It, Luca is our Rowing Counselor! Luca was on the Oakland Strokes Rowing team in high school and has many years of swim experience as well. He is going into his third year at Diablo Valley College, where he studies criminal justice reform. In Luca’s spare time, he enjoys hiking, skiing, and playing soccer.
Ryan Sintchak
Fishing Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
Santa Clara University
Ryan is from Moraga and just graduated from Campolindo High School. He was a Scholar Athlete 4 years in a row at Campolindo High School for soccer and football. He will be attending Santa Clara University in the fall. He became an Eagle Scout and Mountaineer for Troop 212 Moraga in 2022. Ryan brings a ton of fishing experience here to Roughing It. He has a merit badge in fishing, has taught kids to fish, and even has been fishing in Alaska
