Meet our Unit One Counselors and Staff
Abby Post
Unit 1 Leader, 5th Year Staff Member
Skidmore College — Health and Human Physiology major
Abby is returning this year as Unit Leader. Abby was the Unit leader last summer. This will be Abby’s 15th year at camp! She began her career at Roughing It as a First Grade (G1) camper and went on to become a CILT and Jr Counselor. Abby graduated from Skidmore College this May in New York and plans to be a physical therapist. Abby is a welcoming hand to new staff and assists all the group counselors in organizing activities, teaching staff the RI way, helping campers try new things and grow, and especially to help make camp fun
Saniya Campbell
KP Group Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
Louisiana State University — Criminology & Anthropology Double Major
Saniya is from Oakland and attends Louisiana State University where she received the African American Achievement Award. She is double majoring in criminology and anthropology. Before starting at Louisiana State University, she was the captain of her softball team in high school. She has also been a camp counselor before at Hip Wah Summer Program. Saniya always comes with a positive attitude and is great at communicating with campers!
Nora Dolan
KP Assistant Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
University of Oregon – Development Psychology major
Nora is from Pinole and is a first-time counselor at Roughing It. She just graduated from El Cerrito High School and is going to go to University of Oregon where she plans to study developmental psychology. She has received the Apex Scholarship for her university. Nora wants to make summer a memorable and enriching experience for all campers!
Solana "Soli" Gibson
K Group Assistant Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
Sonoma State University
Soli was a Roughing It camper for 4 years with the added addition of being a junior counselor last year. She is back this year as first-time assistant counselor! She just graduated from St. Mary’s College High School and will be attending Sonoma State University in the fall. Soli strives to make camp fun for everyone!
Kelly Valdez
K Assistant Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
UC Davis – Environmental Science and Management major
Kelly is a second-year student at UC Davis majoring in Environmental Science and Management. She volunteered with the Pleasant Hill Library to record educational videos about the environment. This is her first year with us here at Roughing It. Kelly is a local of the East Bay and loves being outdoors and staying active. She was also awarded the State Seal of Civic Engagement from the MDUSD. Kelly brings fun and is very engaging with our campers, which they really enjoy
Brian Thomas
B1 Group Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
Harvard University
Brian is enjoying his first summer here with us at Roughing It! He is from Moraga, and is currently attending Harvard, where he plays on the men’s volleyball team. Brian has attended a variety of camps when he was younger, and is excited to bring his experience working with children to camp!
Benjamin Davis
B1 Assistant Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
UC Davis
Ben is a Moraga native who is currently studying at UC Davis. He has worked at camps in the past, and currently works with children at the Davis Kids Klub as a math tutor. Education, especially about the environment has always been a big focus for Ben. This is his first summer with us, and we are lucky to have him!
Nicole Rothe
G1 Group Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
Washington State University – Social Science major
This is Nicole’s first summer with us here at Roughing It! She has just graduated from Washington State University where she studied Social Science. An avid camper, she has attended wildlife camps in both Oregon and California, and has worked as a counselor at Tahoe Donner Day Camp as well! Nicole brings a lot of skills to teach our campers, including swimming, canoeing and sports. She is great with kids and is a great member of our team!
Sonia Mun
G1 Assistant Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
University of Nevada, Reno — Sociology major
Sonia is here for her first summer at Roughing It. She is currently attending the University of Nevada, Reno where she is pursuing a degree in Sociology. Sonia brings high-level swimming skills to camp as she used to swim and dive in high school. She also has attended many camps growing up, and is looking forward to sharing those experiences with our campers.
Thomas Rombach
B2 Group Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
Vassar College — Drama major
Thomas is from Berkeley and is a first time counselor here at Roughing It. He brings with him counselor experience, and leadership as he has worked for Bentley Summer Camp in the past, and was also the captain of his cross-country team. Thomas is currently in his third year at Vassar College where is studying to be an actor. He brings a fun and learning atmosphere that the campers love.
DeJuan "Antonio" Torres
B2 Assistant Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
Cornish College of the Arts — Graphic Design major
Antonio found his love for the outdoors and being active when he attended Balarat Camp in Colorado. He is currently attending the Cornish College of the Arts to obtain a degree in graphic design. Antonio’s positivity is infectious, and in just his first year he is a great influence for our campers here at Roughing It.
Sally Post
G2 Group Counselor, 2nd Year Staff Member
Sally has been a huge part of our team here for a couple of years now. She has been attending Roughing It since the first grade. Sally then became a CILT for two years, became a Junior Counselor, and now she is one of our Group Counselors. She he has been such a great presence for us here for so long!
Haley Hartman
G2 Assistant Counselor, 2nd Year Staff Member
This Haley’s first year working at Roughing It Day Camp! Haley grew up in Lamorinda and is a rising junior at Marist College in New York. She was a Girl Scout for 14 years. Haley also attended Diablo Day Camp growing up and then became a counselor-in-training
Ryan Daroy
B3 Group Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
University of Southern California
This is Ryan’s first summer here at Roughing It. He is a veteran of the Marine Corps, and also volunteers for the American Red Cross in their emergency room. Ryan is currently attending University of Southern California where he plans to further his education. He loves to teach, and is a great role model for our campers to look up to.
Julia Berg
G3 Group Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
University of Miami
Julia is at Roughing It for the first time this summer! She will be attending the University of Miami in the fall where she will be on the rowing team. Julia enjoys playing sports such as volleyball, and soccer, and also loves arts and crafts. She is looking forward to helping our campers have a fun and safe camp experience that they will always remember.
Rochelle Cloven
G2 Assistant Counselor, 1st Year Staff Member
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
Rochelle is enjoying her first summer here at Roughing It. She currently is attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where she loves to be outside in the SLO area. Rochelle has a ton of swim team experience, and has a scuba certification! Her outgoing and adventurous personality fits in really well at camp.
Izzy Davis
G3 Group Counselor, 2nd Year Staff Member
Berkeley City College — Early Childhood Development major
This is Izzy’s second year as a Roughing It staff member. She is studying early childhood development at Berkeley City College. Izzy has a background in equestrian and has been working with horses her whole life.
