The start of the camp seson is just around the corner! This can be an exciting time for kids and parents. When choosing a camp there is a lot to consider and many ways to educate yourself about camp and prepare your child for the camp they will be attending over the summer. To get everybody ready for camp we have some tips and tricks to help both you and your child prepare for the start of camp!

Visit Camp – Attending an Open House and getting an opportunity to see the camp site is a great way to ease your child comfortably into summer camp. Going to the site gives you and your child a way to get a visual of the camp and helps you see where everything takes place.

Watch the Camp Videos – Camp websites provide a lot of information, a great place to start when getting to know a camp is their videos! Videos often give a great overview to the camp and gives you a better understanding of the camp culture and values that are more subtle when simple reading information provided on the website.

Request a Camp Schedule – Prepare your child for camp by going over what activites they’ll get to do each day at camp! If you are not provided with a schedule request one from the camp or see if a request form is available online. Reviewing the schedule with your camper will give them a better sense of what they’re doing at camp and will give you an idea of what your child gets to participate in each day.

Attend a Camp Show – Most camps offer several ways to come and get educated about their camp program. Attending a camp show is a great way to get valuable information about the camp community, how programs and lessons are run and to see what the camp is all about! Camp Shows give a great understanding about what the camps main focus and allows you to ask detailed questions.

Meet the Counselors – An important part of making your child’s camp experience exceptional is their counselor. If the opportunity is provided, having your child meet their counselor in advance is a great way to get them comfortable and have a familiar face to look forward to seeing on the first day of camp. If there is not opportunity to meet a cousnelor face to face check out the camp’s blogs, webpage, and social media sites. Camps usually make posts regarding their staff as they get closer to summer.

Read a Book About Camp – Reading books about camp is another fun way to get ready for the first day of real camp! From children’s storybooks to longer chapter books there are a variety of camp related books that can make the idea of camp seem more exciting.
