Today was Outback Day in Outdoor Explorers. Outback Day is a day when choice periods are a bit longer so campers can really get into an activity, go on a longer hike, complete a special challenge, do a more in-depth craft, or fish from another dock around the reservoir. Today campers did lots of fishing and hiking, as well as a little bit of rowing and outdoor cooking.
The fishermen and fisherwomen hiked to both the Ranger Station dock and to a dock on the other side of the reservoir. Campers were accompanied by trusty Fisherman Josh and our awesome JC for the week, Alyssa. The hike and fish choice is great because campers learn how to carry their poles safetly and how to rig them up to fish once they arrive at the dock.
At outdoor cooking today campers learned how to build a fire and the different types of structures that can be constructed. We also discovered the three things fires need to be maintained (heat, fuel, and oxygen)! Today we made vegetable kabobs. There is a lot of work that goes into kabobs! Campers did lots of cutting of vegetables. We had zuchini, onion, bell peppers (red, green, and yellow), and corn. They took a while to cook but campers played some games patiently while they waited. Colorful and delicious!
