Outdoor Activities for Earth Day and Spring!

Spring is here! What a great time to get outside and take advantage of what your local parks have to offer! Try new outdoor activities and bring your family and friends to the Lafayette Reservoir to enjoy nature. Get in shape by taking a short hike around the lower lakeside trail.  It’s only 2.75 miles and on the way you can take short detour and go on a nature hike down to the docks along the waterfront.  Try a little fishing down at the docks on the east side or just enjoy being on the water.

If you’re up for more of an adventure, try the upper Rim Trail which the Lafayette Reservoir is a 6.78 mile hike with lots of good hills to climb, and awesome views of Mt. Diablo and the reservoir. Trek through the fields and explore all the spring wildlife.  See how beautiful the hills are; so lush and green! Wildflowers are popping up everywhere, decorating the emerald hills with splashes of color! Can you spot our state flower?

There is an abundance of wildlife to discover at the Lafayette Reservoir! See if you can spot a coot, or family of herons and watchCoot floating at the Lafayette Reservoir the Mallard ducks float by! Remember, take only pictures and leave only footprints! And if you get a great shot, send it in to camp@roughingit.com! We love to see what people find out at the Lafayette Reservoir!

If the spring weather isn’t enough to get you and your family outside, Saturday April 23 is Earth Day! Try out a Family Hikes in the east bay to celebrate! Or, Volunteer to help Save Mt. Diablo! Most communities have local earth day celebrations as well.  Lafayette is having a picnic on the Green from 11:30am – 1:30pm.  From 11:00am-3:00pm Plaza Way will be turned into “Eco-Way” featuring the “Backyard of Tomorrow”.  For more information, visit www.sustainablelafayette.org.

Regardless, of where you venture to this weekend – go explorer outside and enjoy the spring sunshine!
