Ready for Camp – Global Citizenship and Summer Camp

Camp is not only a great way to prepare children for adulthood, but it also helps prepare children to become global citizens.  Every year, summer camps across the country welcome many international campers from countries all over the world. Our camp is fortunate to be located in the San Francisco bay area and for years we have had the privilege of having international campers attend camp every summer.  They not only teach our US campers about the world but bring everything they learn at camp home with them.  An article by the American Camp Association called “Education for Global Citizenship: A Role for Summer Camp” explains how going to camp benefits children on a global scale and teaches children everywhere how to be global citizens.

The life lessons that children learn every day at camp help children become more aware of their place in the world and more familiar with new cultures. Children’s experiences at summer camp even mirror many of the outcomes that UNESCO qualifies as attributes for global citizenship.

At camp, children learn how to get along, respect each other, and accept each other’s differences.  These skills help them interact with people of different cultures and forge a connection with the rest of the world.  It is wonderful to see campers gain new insights into the world, develop a deeper understanding of different cultures, and form new friendships.  These experiences provide long term benefits and skills that give children a broader understanding of their connection to the rest of the world.
