SUPPORT POSITIONS

Summer Secretary/Office Assistant

The Summer Secretary/Office Assistant assists in the camp office and is responsible for answering phones, taking messages and/or camper registrations, running errands as needed, and completing other tasks assigned by camp administrators. The summer secretary should have excellent communication/phone skills, have the ability to type accurately and quickly, and should possess a good knowledge of computers and use of the Internet.

Maintenance Worker

The Maintenance Worker(s) are responsible for maintaining all areas of camp. Duties include, keeping sites clean, delivering supplies to activity areas, running errands and completing other jobs assigned by administrative staff. Outdoor repair projects and light ranch work are likely tasks of maintenance workers. These staff members may also be asked to assist the transportation coordinator in vehicle maintenance of camp vans, buses, and trucks. Prior experience in these areas of work, is not necessary, but would be beneficial. It is also helpful if maintenance workers are able to drive manual transmission vehicles, but is not a requirement.

Groom

Roughing It hires a number of grooms to work at our riding sites. Grooms have the responsibility of feeding and grooming a herd of 30+ horses, and will be asked to tack and un-tack horses daily. It is expected, as part of daily duties, that grooms will shovel manure in all paddocks, arenas, and walking areas, and are in charge of keeping the entire riding site clean and well maintained. Grooms will occasionally be asked to provide first aid to horses with minor wounds. It is recommended that applicants for the groom position are very comfortable around horses, and have a strong background in horsemanship and riding.

Ranch Hand

The Ranch Hand is part of the Roughing It support staff, and is responsible for many tasks at our riding sites. S/he is responsible for the overall maintenance of the Ranch Camp facility, and may be asked to complete minor repairs at our other riding sites as well. Duties of the ranch hand include, but are not limited to, tacking and un-tacking horses, shoveling manure, fence repairs and other site maintenance projects, as well as occasionally providing first aid to horses with minor wounds. The ranch hand may also be asked to assist Ranch Camp Counselors/Instructors with riding lessons, and will often co-lead trail riding excursions. It is helpful if the ranch hand is able to drive manual transmission vehicles, and also beneficial if s/he has had previous experience driving tractors and other farm equipment. A strong background in riding, horsemanship, and caring for horses and farm animals is recommended.

Horse Feeders

Horse Feeders are hired as part of support staff, and are responsible for feeding a herd of 30+ horses, on Saturday and Sunday mornings and evenings. These staff members may choose to work additional hours on weekend days in order to assist with site maintenance and manure control. Opportunities to work Monday-Friday, or various days, are also available. Horse Feeders should have a good knowledge of horses, and must be comfortable working alone, around a herd of horses.

* Horse Feeders are often paid $10.00 per feed, but will be compensated at the rate of $7.00/hour for additional time and work put in at the site.
